This is the true story of Ronald Read, a stock market legend. He died at the age of 92 in Brattleboro, Vermont. Neighbors, friends, and even family, were shocked to learn he had amassed an $8 million dollar estate. In his will, he left $6 million to the local hospital and library, and the rest to his family.
So how did he build an $8 million portfolio? He achieved this through the purchase of dividend paying stocks throughout his long life. He lived frugally, saved aggressively, and reinvested dividends by purchasing more stock. His portfolio is an incredible example of the power of compound interest.

I'm a military barracks rat with zero debt. I follow a 20/20/60 rule: live off 20% of my paycheck, put 20% into my emergency fund and invest the remaining 60%. If I have anything remaining from my 20% "live off of" money I invest it. I also do food delivery when I'm off duty and that covers gas and maintenance; whatever profit I make goes to series I bonds.
The 60% investment goes to my Roth, which is 100% SCHD, until I reach the maximum $6k contribution. After that I start feeding my taxable, which is 100% VOO.
My biggest takeaway is why accumulate that money and not spend your hard-earned reward?
duck tape 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Some people are practical and not materialistic. They don't spend money on useless things.
did he take his 8 Million with him? should be balanced.. make $$ save for rainy da and enjoy with rest.. life is short.
this makes me feel good for being down 15% down on paypal.
Great content. Id really like to hear about anything you would do differently if you could go back to when you were getting started, lessons you learned the hard way.
Hello, I'm fairly new to day trading and I'm currently getting my affairs in order to allow me to try this, I wanted to know I have seen in a lot of your videos when your doing a live training that when you go to sell off you a lot of times only sell off 1/2 of what you bought then go back and buy in, is there a reason for that? why not sell it all then come back in and buy again if your going to do that anyways? thank you in advanced.
This is a wonderful story. It gives me a lot of inspiration!
Wow SIR.
The story just motivated me to START as early as possible.
Thank you for the true story.
Hello Ross, what if someone has 10 green day's and on the 11th day gives all the profit back, this happens so often. What do you suggest ?
The story is actually sad. Why be the richest person in the graveyard. He should've enjoyed his life and his money. He earnt it!
I would be Happy if i can earn atleast 10$ a day from trading
The stock market is one of the most potential places to invest your money, investing in stock is often risky which draws attention to the huge gains and losses of investors, if you can manage the risk then you can take advantage of the stock market to secure your financial position and earn money. Starting early is the best way getting ahead to build wealth, investing remains a priority. The stock market has plenty of opportunities to a decent payouts, with the right skills and proper understanding of how the market works
I doubt that he was living in fear because he kept so much money in the market. I also suspect that he was happy because he avoided the trappings of greed and achieved his larger goals: contributing back to society and making sure that his children were taken care of.
I hope he was able to enjoy that wealth.
Thanks for this story! It is great encouragement and inspiration to hear that I am not alone, from another janitor working his way up in that same way.
I just wanted to point out that duct tape is an amazing product. I was just telling my husband who just spent $1000 fixing a hole in his gas tank, that he should’ve just wrapped that mf in duct tape, probably could’ve lasted a year. Duct tape is no joke.
Thank you Ross. This is very inspirational and truly I have learnt a lesson
For 10 years I would invest about $2500 a year in dividend stocks. I would not take out any money, I would invest in stocks that have DRIP's. I am now retired and this is really helping with my government pension. Not rich but living well!

There is a YouTube video of a "Down on her luck" homeless women in Brattleboro who is a former hard working, very articulate and educated person. Her story was intriguing to me when I watched her speak… Seek her out if possible and lend her some empathy and another shot at life…
Fellow Vermonter here. From the North East Kingdom. Second year of my trading career and just went full time. Just want you to know your an inspiration. Thank you!
It would have been interesting to compare it to the inflation… because $125/month was a lot in 1950.
The stock market rally run is over but I don't know if stocks will quickly rebound, continue to pull back or move sideways for a few weeks, or if conditions will rapidly deteriorate.I am under pressure to grow my reserve of $250k.
Money is made to be spent, but many people get more out of just having it, knowing it's there if you need it, rather than spending it and it's more important to them to leave it behind when they go. I imagine the old guy lived his life just how he wanted to, he didn't need or want the new cars or fancy home, the expensive vacations or toys. It's easy to live life that way because that's who he was. I've known a lot of old guys just like him over the years. I guess we all will leave this life the same way we came, with nothing. Some leave it all behind and some have nothing to leave behind.
